Great story I love to tell about Leon Landry.
The first time I saw Landry, I didn’t see him. I heard him. I know a gunshot when I hear it. It was at Harwich in Summer 2009. Landry was fresh out of a car with his family. He was in the side cage out at that little field. And I heard the gunshot.

I had my first look at LSU outfielder Leon Landry since the Cape at the UCLA Regional. What I found was a guy who has taken the next step up the athletic conditioning ladder. Always a good athlete, Landry is much leaner and meaner than he was in the summer, and he’s turning himself into a classic National League top-of-the-order guy with the potential for punch.

Leon Landry showed up on the Cape after the College World Series in 2009 and Baseball Beginnings happened to be working the beat that day. Even hitting with wood for the first day in a long time and after a long drive, Landry still had the raw ability that really jumped off the page for me. You have to have something for me to truly remember you because I see tons of players. I’m on the record for liking Landry as much as anyone else I liked in the Cape in 2009. I think he’s a plus runner who will spray the ball and run like hell. He’ll play defense. Give him a few years and there should be some left-handed pop in there.

Your information is only as good as the savvy of your sources. I like what I can relay to my readers here. The quotes here are from a regional source with playing and scouting experience. As I said earlier, these are not my words thinly veiled. I saw a few of these guys last summer on the Cape. (more…)

Leon Landry walked out of the car, took BP, and promptly got a base knock on his first night on the Cape in 2009. A few hours before that, he was kind enough to visit with Baseball Beginnings to talk about the uphill fight to national recognition.
Landry hit .364 (36-for-99) last summer for Harwich, playing left field and fighting through the sore shoulder he banged up in the College World Series. He was ranked as the Cape’s No. 14 prospect by the kids in North Carolina, but for me, he would have been a top ten prospect in that league. I’ll tell you why: I like guys with three tools, starting with the bat. I don’t care for one-dimensional singles hitters or five o’clock all-stars.
I’m on the record for saying I think Landry can and will hit. Not every scout has said so. I’ve heard some say they fear he has no trigger. I say, look where his hands are.

Leon Landry was one of the players I liked best in the 2009 Cape Cod League, and I’ll tell you why: the guy showed me three weapons that can beat you. Landry has left-handed power, left-handed gap-to-gap ability, and he can run just enough to be dangerous. He’ll catch what he gets to and would have maximum value in center field. Most of all, he brought his tools into the games with him, which excited me. You can watch the video here and read the report after the jump.

Leon Landry walked into Harwich for his first day in the Cape Cod League and promptly showed you almost everything you wanted to see about the LSU outfielder. Landry’s stocky physique might not be the ideal frame, but my advice is to watch this guy’s hands.
